The Prevention Services Program
Line

Prevention ServicesPathfinders Prevention Services, was developed primarily by and for African American women and its goal is to reduce the spread of HIV in difficult-to-reach and at-risk populations. The Prevention Services Program utilizes peer education and combines motivational, educational, and skills building elements to instruct and promote healthy sexual behavior. Recently, Prevention Services implemented a program specifically aimed at reducing HIV sexual risk behavior among African American women. Prevention Services recognizes the value of cultural and gender appropriate materials to acknowledge pride and enhance self worth in being an African-American woman. The program has now expanded its services to teenagers in order to provide better service and awareness to the larger community.

In 2007...

  • 60% of the women participating in the Prevention Services program sustained behavioral change.
  • 97% of the participants in the Prevention Services program changed previously held attitudes and beliefs about HIV/AIDS.
  • 98% of the women had a better understanding of the prevention methods including the correct use of and how to negotiate using a condom.
